CITY LIGHTS SERIES
CITY LIGHTS SERIES
The way of making these impressions came about while I was traveling in Europe during the summer of 2001, where I began to explore the possibilities of longer exposure times, of forgetting about mere picturing or documenting, and instead using light (specially fading sunlight and electrical lights) and the camera itself as an effect to fill the picture plane. The advantage of working in a digital medium is not that the pictures are worked up after being taken, but that the instant feedback provided by the camera allows for quick adjustments in order to continue to capture the lights while in situ.
Although I did carry a tripod with me to ensure that the camera remained focused on the subject, the more interesting compositions resulted from when the open shutter of the camera interacted with the subject matter. That interaction, the picture-taking process, became the subject matter. Although this series remained dormant for several years, advances in digital photography have rekindled my interest, as I am now able make large prints of the images taken with very portable equipment. What follow are the images taken in the last couple of years, mainly in New York City and the island of St. Maarten, just as Hurricane Irene was brewing. The “Independence” series of exploding fireworks is closely related.
These photographs were first exhibited at the Echo Art Fair in Buffalo, NY are available in a limited edition. The large prints, an edition of three, are printed on Kodak metallic paper, mounted on aluminum and face mounted under plexiglass. The smaller pieces are available in an edition of six, printed with archival pigment inks on a high-resolution wide-format Canon printer, mounted on board and finished under UV epoxy resin - a complex process that yields a durable and long-lasting finish. For those of you on a budget, “45th near Broadway” is also available matted 12 x 16”, in a signed edition of 50.
